Cyber Essentials is a UK Government scheme, introduced in 2014, that offers SMEs a straightforward and affordable cyber security certification. By aligning with its five critical technical controls, businesses can safeguard themselves against up to 80% of common internet-based attacks, while showing clients, partners and stakeholders that they take cyber security seriously.
It focuses on five key areas of cyber security: update management, user access, firewalls, secure configuration and malware protection. Certification comes in two levels, Cyber Essentials, a self-assessment, and Cyber Essentials Plus, which requires an independent technical audit.
